I do promise to get back to Layer Standards mechanics and the NCS. CAD Standards can be befuddling mostly because they’re all about boring consistency and repetitive validation. Your brain goes numb. The NCS Layer Standards rely on the concept and practice of a standard Pattern (Keys and delimiters) coupled with Major and Minor Keys. Every CAD Layer or Level standard employs this basic concept these days. True, we could just employ the unique numeric IDs the software’s actually use, but these aren’t very user friendly. We walked away for good human reasons.
