AutoCAD Civil 3D demands a well-managed project model. Civil 3D real world performance depends on that managed Dynamic Model. This can be a painful lesson to learn at publication crunch time when work has to get out the door. You practice regularly to eliminate crunch time performance problems? Say what?

Let’s face it - Surfaces play a huge role in civil engineering and survey work. When I train people in AutoCAD Civil 3D surfaces I frequently get this question:
“Is there any way for me to see what changes I’ve made to a Civil 3D Surface?”
First things first. Did you visualize the surface with at least 3 different Civil 3D Surface Style Tools?

The Civil 3D Managed Dynamic Model means that if you plan ahead carefully you can set a lot of the Data Reference connections up in advance using simple "place holder" Features and then replace the connections later with more detailed or "complete" ones later.
It Pays To Be Prepared
In other words, you can use simple Feature stuff to do the Dynamic Model building up front and then…

A Managed Dynamic Model depends on systematic and managed and use of AutoCAD Civil 3D Feature centric Data References (DREFs). Technically, AutoCAD Civil 3D does not require a project connection to function. Instead is supports a more flexible and practical mechanism – association. Therefore, Civil 3D is actually more dependent on project structure, organization,…

Anyone who trains and helps folks in AutoCAD Civil 3D runs into the “All in one” drawing. In this drawing the user builds the existing surface. The drawing also contains the design alignment and profile data too. Maybe they even get as far as an attempt to build a roadway rehabilitation corridor to repave that city street. Maybe at that point they realize they are stuck. How do they test options…
