Civil engineers and surveyors who employ Autodesk civil software know a thing or two about Description Key Sets. Everyone’s an expert to one level or another by necessity. The DescKey concept and technology has been around a long time back to the old Land Desktop (LTD) days.
Why bother to talk about this topic at all?

Once upon a time at Autodesk University I delivered a popular CAD Manager track session called People Skills. I think it is safe to say that us techy types often tend to have people and management issues. We tend to want people to behave like software or man-made objects and then they don’t and won’t.
I’m a storyteller. I don’t do standup…

The title for this post sounds almost like a car finish product. Go on down to the box store and pick up some Surface Care today. Civil 3D Surface Care is in the aisle next to that beer sold by dem Artesians. You remember the Artesians? Don’t you? Ok. Maybe not. You should.

We shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel to employ Civil 3D point data successfully. After more than ten releases of Civil 3D that would be dumb. The Pareto Principal, that famous 80 20 Rule, applies to our civil engineering and survey data. I argue, and most civil and survey folk would agree, that 20% of what we gather and create drives a large part of our project…

We all know about bad assumptions. You believe something is totally obvious. You proceed to talk about a subject that way. People in the crowd nod their heads in affirmation. Meanwhile that same audience is actually completely baffled. This is a pretty common symptom of ED - Expert’s Disease. Oops, that didn’t come out exactly as I intended. You do get what I mean.
I had…
