Many people out here in Civil 3D Land wait for the first Autodesk Civil 3D update to migrate to a new Civil 3D release. Maybe there is a reason for that. Fancy that? The Autodesk Civil 3D 2027.1 Update hit the street this week. 2027.1 Update packs a bunch.

As is the norm for many recent Civil 3D release cycles, there are probably more important and/or significant production improvements and fixes buried in this first Civil 3D 2027.1 Update than in the initial annual Rite of Spring release of Civil 3D 2027.

We have new approaches to some daily Civil 3D interface mechanics to adapt to, learn to embrace, or curse depending on our perspective.

If you avoided Civil 3D 2027 to this point, it is probably a good idea to see the way too long Autodesk Civil 3D 2027 Lands post and watch some of the New in Civil 3D 2027 videos.
Just sayin’ that won’t hurt too much.

AutoCAD 2027.1 Update

First things first - Civil 3D never runs alone. There is an important AutoCAD 2027.1 Update that must be installed first to update both the AutoCAD and Map 3D Toolset that Civil 3D 2027 and Civil 3D 2027.1 Update are dependent on.
See the recent Stomp on the Foot in Civil 3D blog post.

See the News page for the most recent releases of important Autodesk 2027.1 Update release integration code:

You may experience 2027.1 Update installation and/or deployment problems without the above updates installed.

We know the drill, but it is easy to miss or drop reference or two.

We should all be aware by now that Autodesk has made significant improvements to our ability to schedule and manage the deployment of releases, updates, and related code to end users. Hoorah.

We are not trying to bury you in things to read about yet another Civil 3D Update. Most people don’t do the RTM thing anyway. The folks do say that a few pointers and reminders do help. Dooh.

Where’s the Beef

The end user highlight of the Civil 3D 2027.1 Update is the obvious result of the newer integration of the AutoCAD and Civil 3D development teams. A newly updated AutoCAD Reference Manager palette tool contains a new DREF (Data Shortcut) tab and some simple user tools to help us identify the health of and fix XREF (external dwg reference), IREF (image references), and now DREF (data shortcut) references.

Most of us are generally familiar with the Fix Broken Data Shortcut tools in Civil 3D. These have evolved over a number of Civil 3D releases. The new AutoCAD Reference Manager palette tool interface includes new versions those tools and some newer fixes for Forma (Docs), BIM Collaboration, ACC (Autodesk Construction Cloud) projects.

Fear not. The new Reference Manager interface and DREF tab tools doesn’t replace the esssential Civil 3D Data Shortcut Manager (DSM) tool nor our need of the external Data Shortcut Editor to help us all manage and maintain the health of our Civil 3D production projects and DREF reference structures.
The DSM should be a daily and familiar friend. If not, make the DSM your bestie.

The UnBroken DREF

The Civil 3D 2027.1 Update appears to employ a new and different test order or precedence for the validity of DREF sources. Now the availability of core AutoCAD file references does appear to affect the test results and even whether a not really broken Data Shortcut can be fixed. Huh?

If you are presented with apparent DREF false positives or are unable to resolve a broken DREF issue by fixing with the new tools or even the classic DSM tool, check for other missing file references like missing .ctb, .stb, or other core AutoCAD file references.

The new AutoCAD Reference Manager tool code appears to have more access to more of the core AutoCAD Object Model.
This weirdness makes sense is a strange sort of way.
The law of unexpected consequences applies.

The Framework for Civil 3D and the Civil 3D 2027.1 Update

Our preliminary testing on our Jump Kit 2027 and Templates Only 2027 samples and project resources after a Civil 3D Batch Save Utility update produces our typical Civil 3D Update or version Upgrade result.

The Framework product Civil 3D Templates, Civil 3D Styles, and other Civil 3D resources for Civil 3D 2027.0 will update and run fine in the Civil 3D 2027.1 Update. No worries. No surprises.

We appear to have no broken Civil 3D Styles, Civil 3D Label Styles, and/or Civil 3D Sets aside from the minor new addition of some potential Label Style component additions for the newer Drainage Features in this latest Civil 3D 2027.1 Update.

Now that the official Civil 3D 2027.1 Update is on the street Jump Kit 2027 and Templates Only 2027 customers can expect the new Civil 3D 2027.1 Object Model builds real soon now.

Of course, there are always things to fix and improve. It’s what we do.
