How to Create Map 3D Object Data Labels from SHP Data

Comments

Jerry Bartels of Autodesk covers the quick and dirty basics of the creation of Map 3D Object Data Table templates and Labels in Map 3D.
He demos how to use the MAPANNTEXT command to generate data driven labels from an imported SHP file.
Jerry employs typical parcels in the example. This process in pretty simple given you have the data table and the SHP data.
From the Jerry's YouTube Channel.
and the Civil Imersion blog.

Seriously left unsaid is that you might actually want to build Civil 3D parcels in a Site Parcel from this sort of data.
This is certainly possible, but you'll have more serious work cut out for you.
Often the SHP exports are quite often really dirty with buried segments and bits and pieces.
You'll need to learn about the great Map Cleanup tool which every Civil 3D user must master.
Autodesk could automate this a bit, but don't hold your breath.

ESRI topologies are not Map 3D topologies. This is a good thing, but not the issue.
No. There isn't a Map topology employed in this example.
Civil 3D Site Parcels (a topology too) are a different beast yet again from both of the above.
Discover more than you want to know about Civil 3D Parcels in this series of posts.
After a decade+ nothing has been done to fix even the Autodesk integration.
So in the end Jerry's tip is valuable when push comes to shove.

How to Create a Road Network Buffer Query in Map 3D

Comments

Jerry Bartels of Autodesk covers the bare basics of the creation of a Buffer Topology Query built from Civil 3D Alignments in Map 3D.
The idea here is to discover effected trees relative to roadway right of ways, but the basic methodology works for any point location data source and network.
From the Jerry's YouTube Channel.
and the Civil Imersion blog.

The fact that we still cannot query with Map 3D on Civil 3D object types is beyond annoying.
I won't bore you with how simple this would be to fix because it simply ain't happening.
Why would anyone want to do that? - Like actually have Autodesk civil software work together for a change?

See the Alignment Based Point Group post for details of how to employ a Civil 3D Station Offset report to produce Alignment related Point Groups, Labels, etc in Civil 3D.
That post has the step-by-step method you can employ to relate point data to any Alignment for any purpose like finding pullboxes or fir trees. Can we say, "Awesome"?
The Deliverables video training course available here to Members takes this to a more productive level.

The Basics of Civil 3D Label Styles and Label Sets

Comments

Mike Racca of the Florida Dept of Transportion (FDOT) CADD Support Group covers the basics of Label Style and Label Set in Civil 3D.
From the FDOT Training YouTube Channel.

Mike does a fast and yet detailed coverage of this mission critical Civil 3D topic.
There are well-constructed and informative slides and three distinct and more than adequate demostrations of the practics of Civil 3D Label Style and Set edits and application.

My only caveat would probably be the misuse of the Layer property assignment that happens in the Contour Label edit.
We can assume the Layer Linetype property is part of the standard.
To change that to "fix" the Label Style border component display is probably a no-no and not what you want to do.
Annotative Labels shouldn't go on contour graphic display Layers in the first place. OK. It is just a demo. No big deal.
