Right before the 2017 Christmas weekend Autodesk released an update to Civil 3D 2018 -  the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Update. This second Civil 3D Update includes new features, product improvements, and update fixes to both AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 and the previously released AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.1 Update.

The AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Update is available via the Autodesk Desktop app and via the Autodesk Subscription download pages for Autodesk subscription customers. The Autodesk Desktop app requires and will receive an update to download and install this latest AutoCAD Civil 3D Update.

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Update

The Civil 3D on-line help includes a listing and explanation of the
New Features in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2.

You may want to carefully read the various 2018 update version specific Interoperability issues.

We updated the Autodesk Online Help page on the website with the recent Civil 3D 2018.2 Update help links.

I’ve included a few comments below you may find useful and corrected a few minor issues in the readme.

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Design Efficiency Updates

Profile Layout Direction:

  • Draw fixed profile tangents and lay out profiles in either a left-to-right or right-to-left direction when using the Fixed Tangent (Two Points) command and the Draw Tangents and Draw Tangents With Curves
Previously these commands required using a left-to-right layout direction.

Vertical Curves in Offset Profile Slope Transition Regions:

  • Vertical curves are now created in slope transition regions for offset profiles. Previously, where vertical curves were present in the parent profile, offset profiles were created with tangent segments in slope transition regions instead of vertical curves.

Rail Turnouts and Crossings Commands:

  • Create and edit rail turnouts and crossovers using the Rail Turnouts and Crossings commands.
These commands can be found in Toolspace > Toolbox > AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 Update 2 > Rail Turnouts and Crossings.

Subassemblies:

The new PKT subassemblies are installed in
..\ProgramData\Autodesk\C3D 2018\enu\2018.2 Update Subassemblies\

This new collection includes many new useful PKT files.
I have yet to check whether or not these employ the Civil 3D stock assembly codes and therefore may or may not require major tweaks to your existing Code Set Styles.

  • A variety of PKT-format subassemblies are included in this update, including new subassemblies and subassemblies that were previously included in the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 v1 Enhancements release.
Details on specific subassemblies that are included can be found in the
Subassemblies Included in the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Update Help topic.
How to import the new PKTs into a Tool Palette is also covered there.

  • The Use Targets On the Same Side As the Subassembly check box was added to the Set Width Or Offset Target dialog box in the AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.1 Update.
    • When this check box is selected, the subassembly will use a target that matches the Side parameter specified for the subassembly (if a target on the same side is specified). For example, if the Side parameter of a subassembly is Right, then a target on the right side of the baseline is used. If multiple targets are on the same side, then the Selection Choice If Multiple Targets Are Found option is applied.
Note: When this check box is selected, a target on the other side will not be used unless there are no targets specified on the same side. In that case, the first target in the Selected Entities to Target list will be used.
    • When this check box is cleared, the subassembly can use a specified target on either side. If multiple targets are specified, then the Selection Choice If Multiple Targets Are Found option is applied and will use the nearest or farthest target on either side.
Note: When the Selection Choice If Multiple Targets Are Found option is applied, the distance between the baseline and the target is calculated as a positive value, regardless of the side of the target.

Pressure Network Content:

  • New metric and imperial pressure network content is included in this release. Details on specific parts that are included can be found in the New Features in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Help topic.

Production Efficiency Updates

These provide some useful cleanups of Section View publishing issues.

3D Solid Crossing Appearance Control in Section Views:

  • Control the appearance of 3D solid crossings that use the style option by modifying the properties of the 3D solid layer. For example, the color of a 3D solid crossing that uses the option is now controlled by the color of the layer associated with the 3D solid rather than by the projection style associated with the solid.

Multi-Select Projection and Crossing Styles in Section Views:

  • Control the appearance of crossing and projected objects and labels using Shift-select and Ctrl-select.
Previously, projected and crossing object or label styles could be controlled one at a time.

Collaboration Efficiency Updates

Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator:

  • Translate AutoCAD® Civil 3D® files to files that can be used in Bentley® GEOPAK® and Bentley®InRoads®, and translate GEOPAK and InRoads files to files that can be used in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
These commands can be found in Toolspace > Toolbox > AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018 Update 2 > Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator.

AutoCAD Civil 3D 2018.2 Update Fixes

Corridors

  • An issue where the Daylight Bench subassembly failed to find the daylight point at certain slopes has been resolved.
  • An issue that caused the ribbon to display as blank when a corridor section was selected has been resolved.
  • An issue that caused a corridor to display an inconsistent station range for the same segment in different viewports has been resolved.

Cross Sections

  • An issue that caused the arrangement of cross sections in legacy drawings to return to a previous location has been resolved.
  • An issue where turning off the visibility of a component in the Projection Styles dialog box also changed the visibility of objects in cross sections has been resolved.
  • An issue where a multiple selection of objects on the Projections and Crossings tab of the Section View Properties dialog box did not allow editing of the properties of the entire selection has been resolved.
  • An issue that prevented a crossing label style from being assigned to a crossing 3D polyline in a section view using the Properties Palette has been resolved.
  • An issue has been resolved where a projected feature line or survey figure that had been set to use a crossing marker style was not displayed in the section view as expected.

Feature Lines

  • An issue that caused the elevation of a feature line to change when editing the elevation of another feature line that was snapped to the PI of the first feature line has been resolved.

Pipe Networks and Pressure Networks

  • An issue that caused the centerline of a pipe network to not honor the Bylayer color and linetype properties after a change to a different layer has been resolved.
  • An issue that caused pipes and structures to not preview with expected layer properties has been resolved.
  • An issue that caused descriptions to be missing for fittings or appurtenances has been resolved.

Profiles

  • An issue that caused hatching to display incorrectly after editing a profile has been resolved.
  • An issue in the French version of AutoCAD Civil 3D where a pipe label in a profile view was not displaying a dot arrow head style when set to that style in a dragged state has been resolved.

Reference Templates

  • An issue where, in some cases, an update to a reference template caused a change to the elevation of a pipe has been resolved.
  • An issue that caused the order of reference templates to change in the Manage Referenced Template Settings dialog box after making a change to a source template has been resolved.

Road Rehab Corridors

  • The depth value in the Rehab Parameters palette has been updated to display values that match the precision of the corresponding dimension.
