Autodesk University 2019 is in the books. If Autodesk says true to form the AU 2019 Online courses and video recordings should be available later this month or early next year. We don’t have to wait. Hoorah. I caught up a little bit over the long Thanksgiving weekend by splitting my screen time between some great football (in multiple flavors of the sport) and some technical AU recordings.

The Autodesk University 2019 Live Stream recordings remain available from the Live Stream page. This includes a Civil 3D course or two that were problematic to view for some during the initial live broadcast.

Ok. I also concede to a day of Thanksgiving chefery including a killer almond ricotta cheesecake with fresh raspberries that magically vanished at the end of the family Thanksgiving feast. That feat aptly demonstrates that it may indeed be possible for multiple objects to occupy the same space at the same time.

If we want to apply Newton’s Third law in this context, we may need to stuff and stretch your brain in response.

Become Autodesk Certified Civil 3D Professional

Autodesk released a free Autodesk Civil 3D on-line training course available on the coursera.org site. The official Autodesk course is an overview of skills that match what is covered in the Civil 3D for Infrastructure Design Exam.

The Autodesk Certified Civil 3D Professional courseware follows the typical workflow and features of the Autodesk Civil 3D software, including sections on points, parcels, and surveying, surfaces and grading, alignments and profiles, corridors and sections, pipe networks, and plan production and data management. The course is more than a mouthful. It is divided into two weeks.

Points, Parcels, Surfaces, and Grading

  • 10 hours to complete
  • 55 videos (242 minutes)
  • 10 Readings
  • 2 Quizzes

Alignments, Profiles, Corridors, Pipe Networks, and Plan Production

  • 13 hours to complete
  • 57 videos (276 minutes)
  • 11 Readings
  • 3 Quizzes

Whoa.

Be Thankful

Autodesk usually makes a course like this available to Autodesk University attendees. Thankfully, they decided to spread the good cheer around. I personally wouldn’t bet the course remains free forever. You might want to pounce on the offer while that free offer remains.

If you are a civil engineering or survey organization principal or a Civil 3D CAD Manager, this free course gives you a powerful tool to up the game of your staff.

Learn & Burn

I believe strongly in the need to be professional - to constantly work to upgrade our professional skills. This requires dedicated and disciplined effort whether we like it or not.
See the Learn Something New About Civil 3D Today post for some practical tips that work.

I employ the huge curated video collection on this site to help me personally pay attention to all the many skills that production Civil 3D work requires of us as cadpilots. Thank you to all the video contributors. Please visit the links to their sites.

I’m thankful for courseware like this as it establishes a foundation for the more nuanced detail and workflows that our daily production work in Civil 3D mandates. I can focus on pertinent and timely matters like the recent Migrate A Civil 3D Test Project to BIM 360 post.

The problem remains the Civil 3D user must do the Learn & Burn do to manifest the benefits.
