Last week Autodesk officially released the new AutoCAD 2020, AutoCAD 2022 LT, and the new AutoCAD 2022 Productivity Toolsets. Er…Well actually, Autodesk already previewed many of the AutoCAD Toolset changes and much more a bit earlier. We all get the point. We are well trained.

You probably already noticed the Autodesk software changes all around us all the time these days. You might want to check out my recent 10x Civil 3D 2022 Considerations post for some important things to consider.

AutoCAD 2022

The Autodesk 2022 release products all include a new Custom Installer that allows administrators and users to pre-configure the installed software or deployment resources before downloading.
See the Autodesk Subscription site for the new Custom Installer help and details.

First…Behind the Scenes

There are a few significant behind-the-scenes performance changes to the AutoCAD platform product in 2022 that may/should/will make users in Civil 3D Land a bit happier.

There is now multi- core-processor support for background publishing built into AutoCAD 2022. That means that behind the scenes publish performance should be better in 2022.

AutoCAD 2022 also supports multi- core-processor support for hatch and boundary detection. That potentially has some interesting downstream benefits for the Autodesk civil engineering and survey applications.

In ACAD 2022 Autodesk speak - the new 3D Graphics Technical Preview feature is more significant in the long term than Autodesk appears to want to let on this time around. I suppose calling it a preview allows the AutoCAD platform group to test things in the real world with some caveats built in. Eheh.

AutoCAD 2022 New Features

The following is a basic summary of the new AutoCAD 2022 features. There is lots of detail available elsewhere. See the links below for more details and videos.

The new Autodesk 2022 product on-line help links now available on the Autodesk Online Help page.

Autodesk Subscription customers with access to AutoCAD are now able to download the new AutoCAD 2022 and Toolsets from the Subscription site.
Users with rights do have access to the Custom Installer. Hoorah.

Start Tab Redesign

The Start Tab redesign for AutoCAD provides a consistent welcome experience for Autodesk products.

Floating Drawing Windows

Drag a file tab off the AutoCAD application window, creating a floating window. This makes it easy to move the drawing to another monitor.

Share Current Drawing

Share a link to a copy of the current drawing to view or edit in the AutoCAD web app. The shared file includes all related dependent files such as xrefs and font files.

Push to Autodesk Docs and BIM 360

Teams can now view digital PDFs in the field for reference. Use Push to Autodesk Docs to upload AutoCAD drawings as PDFs to a specific project on BIM 360 or Autodesk Docs.

Trace

The new Markup interface for Autodesk apps. Think of trace as a virtual, collaborative sheet of tracing paper that's laid over the drawing, allowing collaborators to add feedback right in the drawing.

Count

To get an accurate count of the number of ACAD objects in your drawing is easier than ever. You can also use the Count palette to display and manage the counted blocks in the current drawing.

3D Graphics Technical Preview

Autodesk includes a Technical Preview of a completely new cross platform 3D graphics system being developed for AutoCAD. This new graphics system leverages the power of modern GPUs and multi-core CPUs to offer a smooth navigation experience for much larger drawings than in prior releases.
