Autodesk released the Autodesk Civil 3D 2023.3 Update late last week. The Civil 3D 2023.3 Update was released at the same time as the latest Autodesk Civil 3D 2024.1 Update. Oh yeah. There was also an important AutoCAD 2023.1.4 Update released the day before the Civil 3D 2023.3 Update.

Autodesk tries to keep all our Civil 3D Object Models in sync. There’s that backwards compatibility thing again. That effort makes our Civil 3D upgrades and updates easier. Your Civil 3D 2023 got better.

Seems obvious to me that Autodesk is paying closer attention to the compatibility of the raw AutoCAD and Map 3D code that our Civil 3D relies upon. More and more of our familiar Civil 3D things continue to become raw AutoCAD things over time. Count on it.

Autodesk Civil 3D 2023.3 Update Arrives

We do have good news for our Framework for Civil 3D 2023 product customers too. More on that in a sec.

If you employ Civil 3D 2023 and you install the latest Windows Updates, the AutoCAD Update, and this recent Civil 3D 2023.3 Update, you should notice some daily Civil 3D performance improvements.

This includes some notable graphics performance improvements in the new Civil 3D 2023.3. At least I recognized them. Civil 3D 2023.3 drawing file Opens are better. Even the load times of large Reference Templates (TREF) appears to be improved. One of my personal whines.
Your results may vary.

A recent Corridor Transition Sets how to video example of why Civil 3D 2023.2+ saves us time and energy for common design tasks.

Small Pains and Bigger Gains

The only hinky I noticed to date is that the current 2023.3 version of the Data Shortcut Manager Tool (DSM) no longer always bothers to automatically match a selected Drawing Objects Data Reference (DREF) to the specific Data Shortcut in the list.

Technically, this Data Shortcut link identification resolution issue in the DSM has been true in recent Update versions of Civil 3D.

To be clear - the Civil 3D DREFs do resolve correctly and often the DREF data appears to load quicker in Civil 3D 2023.3 Update. Hoorah.

So, this annoyance is fine by me. Perhaps this is caused by our use of named custom folders in our various Framework Sandbox Projects. Maybe the DSM needs a Data Shortcut panel refresh button? What do I know?

See the Autodesk Civil 3D 2023.3 Update News post for all the official Autodesk details and particulars. They are no notable Civil 3D 2023.3 Update shinny objects. Those are reserved for the Civil 3D 2024.1 Update and that new features and benefits marketing.

Why the Autodesk Desktop Connector Still Matters to You

Autodesk certainly wants your civil engineering and survey projects up in their collaborative Cloud offerings.

There is a new Autodesk Desktop Connector (ADC) update available. There are some goodies in there.
See the Autodesk Desktop Connector 16.4.0.2062 News post.

Whoopie or maybe not. I guess it depends on what you think about that.
Don’t just ignore the ADC.

If you need to validate and fix your local project references, the ADC and it’s handy Reference Explorer Tool is really helpful.

The Reference Explorer can find and identify strange things like broken or out of date Layout References to old Sheet Templates in your project’s ViewFrames.
How about those file resources in that EG Surface model definition that someone moved a couple of months ago?

Don’t try and employ Civil 3D or leave home without it. Eheh.
See the Reference Explorer and Tools in Civil 3D video and post.
