Ah! Ha! This well done, detailed, and mostly complete video demos one of the many Joys of FDO.
Note that you will need to export and republish the FDO contour Surface if your proposed surface is included in the FDO's surface model.
Don't just neglect or forget those standard USGS themes.
These are often more than enough detail to guide your design process once you get used to them.
They might also remind you to change things around when it comes time to actually produce a deliverable.

A basic video with great Surface construction tricks. These are mostly focused on prettier contour presentation.
Typical Weeding and Suplementing values for Coutour and Feature line processing should be based on a spec - aka an agreed on standard for the type of surface.
James covers the often neglected Smoothing Tool for Surfaces in Civil 3D with the important gotchas.

This video walkthrough clearly demostrates the need to plan, name, and execute well when you construct a complex Corridor in Civil 3D.
Note the use of a second base corridor to generate the intermediate surface to simplfy design and maintenance of the proposed design profiles.
I'd probably take the time to make ALL the Design Control Data Shortcut based in a real world project including that base corridor and surface.
