Drape Shapes to Surface to Get a Solids

An interesting quick and dirty method to get to the goal.
You could also employ surface projected Feature Lines and offsets of those to produce the results with the Civil 3D volume tools and reports.
People also tend to forget that Parcel Segments are potential grading features which is another way related to the Feature Line method to attack the problem.

Employ Map FDO for Files

Map Import in Civil 3D

Most of the time you probably mostly want to use a Map Import constructed drawing file as separate XREFs in your project.
Ron sort of hanky waves over the actual importance of a well-built import template file in this process.

Note that the Civil 3D 2019.1 update includes improved LandXML Import and Export Settings options for Feature Lines amoung other things.
Of course, LandXML import/export is not the same thing as Map import/export at all.
